The most important part of building a fine instrument is the material. For a guitar, that would be the choice of wood. The finest guitars are made from solid pieces of some of the best pieces of wood available. Cheap guitars are built from laminate woods, or plywood covered with a laminate wood veneer. A quality instrument is always built from the only the finest solid woods.
Brazilian Rosewood
Brazilian rosewood comes from trees that grow in the forests of Brazil. Because of deforestation and overexploitation, it became illegal to ship this rare wood outside of the United States. For this reason and because of its amazing acoustical properties, Brazilian rosewood is one of the most coveted materials for the back and sides of a fine guitar. A guitar made of Brazilian rosewood is rare and valuable.
Hawaiian Koa
This beautiful golden brown wood has been a prized wood in Hawaii for thousands of years. Natives often made canoes and furniture from the koa. As an instrument made from the wood of the koa is prized for its acoustic properties that create a warm and rich sound. Because the supply of koa is scarce, it is also a prized find.
Bubinga
This African wood, often called African rosewood, is another prized material for fine guitars. Bubinga may come in a variety of colors including reddish hues, reddish-brown hues, and even a brownish violet hue. Besides guitars it is also used in other instruments like harps, basses, and even drums. It provides a mellow, dense, well-rounded tone for a guitar.
