I believe most of the people do not know the main purpose of laying laminate flooring underlay. If you are having laminate floor at home, it will be good for you to know more about this.
For your information, laminate flooring underlay is meant to help to reduce the hollow sound of the new laminate floor. In general, almost all new laminate flooring would create weird sound when people walked on it with their hard-soled shores. This particular underlayment normally comes in a roll and it is made out of foam.
Can you install the underlay on your own?
Yes, it is a simple task. You can do it successfully with the effective tips below:
• Choose the right underlay
There is a wide variety of underlay available in the market. They are offered at different prices. Basically, those inexpensive ones do not provide waterproof or moisture barrier. If you are placing the underlay in the kitchen or bathroom, you are reminded to get water proof underlay. Some are with sound proof. If you have such requirement, please find out the underlay with such special feature.
• Check the sub-floor
Underlay is used to help level the floor imperfections to about 1/8 inch. You can check how level your floor is easily. You just need to use a 12-foot, 2-inch-by-4-inch board to check. You are suggested to set the board on its side and use a tape measure to determine the depth of the low places in your floor. It is important for you to check your floor and evaluate your needs first to find out whether you really need to install a new wood sub-floor.
• Install the underlay
The installation process is simple. You are advised to place the straight edge against the wall tightly. The tape edge will overlap the next piece that is installed. You need to unroll the underlay until it reaches the opposite wall. If it is too long, cut it off with box knife or a pair of scissors. After that, you have to fold back the taped edge and lay the next piece up against the edge of the first one which you have installed. Normally, there is a protective strip covering the tape. You are reminded to remove the strip and stick the taped edge to the second piece of underlay.
I hope the 3 tips mentioned above are able to help you to install the underlay with ease.
