Laminated flooring is usually made by bonding two layers of wood backing. Sometimes more than two plies are used, which makes it slightly more expensive than the two ply ones. The inner core is made by fusing together concentrated layers of particle board and fiber. The surfaces are wooden plies or synthetic material with an attractive wood appliqué.
Since the flooring material is made up of multiple layers, there is less chance for cracks due to humidity induced expansion and contraction.
Laminate wood flooring is available in a wide variety of designs and colors. They have the same look as other expensive flooring options, but are much less expensive, maintenance free, resistant to wear and tear and do not fade over time. Since most laminates are installed over a sub-floor of foam or film underlay, it also provides moisture and sound reduction. Laminate wooden floors also have high resistance to UV rays and protect the floor design from fading in sunlight.
Different Types of Wooden Flooring
Wooden floors are categorized in different ways. The most common way of describing wooden flooring is by the species of wood that is used to make the product. Oak, Maple and Ash are hard and readily available. They are very popular choices. Pine is very attractive but much softer than other woods.
Wooden flooring can also be solid wood, engineered or laminated and acrylic impregnated. Solid wood means exactly that, they are made of actual wood. Laminated flooring is made by fusing together several wood plies with the grain alternating in opposite direction to give it more durability. Wooden flooring may also be impregnated with acrylic compounds to make it highly durable. Such flooring is ideal for high traffic areas such as malls and restaurants.
Wooden flooring also comes in different styles “ planks, strips and parquet. Wide plank flooring is the most traditional type of flooring. Plank flooring is typically pieces wider than three inches. Strips are made of shorter pieces of roughly two inches wide. Parquet flooring is where pieces of wood are laid out to construct a pattern or design on the floor.
