A new laminate wood floor may be the best decision you can make. And not to worry, they are not really all that hard to install. With a few simple tools and a little time, you can have a beautiful new floor that will change they whole look and add resale value to your home.
The first step is to measure your floor to determine how much new flooring and underlayment you are going to need. To get your square footage, simply measure side to side both ways across the room and multiply. For instance; if your room measures ten feet by ten feet, multiply ten by ten. In this case, your room is one hundred square feet. It is a good idea to add five percent to the total just in case.
Next, you will need to remove the baseboards to pull up your old carpet and pad. Make sure to remove all staples and tack strips and make sure the old subfloor is clean and level. You may have to scrape off old adhesive.
Once the floor is clean and level, you can place the underlayment pad and connect each piece with clear tape and start laying your laminate. Most types of this flooring are tongue-in-groove and easily snap together. It is important to remember to offset the joints so the seams do not match up perfectly.
All laminate wood floors are considered floating floors. This means that you must leave a quarter inch gap all around the edge of floor because the laminate is attached to itself, but not the house. Don’t worry though, when you replace the baseboards, you will not see the gap. If you find you have a bit too much to cover the gap with the baseboards, no problem. Just add quarter round all around the room and cover up the gap.
Easy install and long lasting, laminate is a great addition to any home.
