Maintained properly, high quality hardwood flooring can last the lifetime of your home! The most effective maintenance techniques involve preventative actions designed to protect your floors from scratches and moisture that degrade your hardwood floors.
The National Wood Flooring Association was created nearly two decades ago for wood flooring professionals to exchange ideas, advance their skills, and increase their knowledge. Today, with over 3,500 members throughout the world, it’s a terrific resource for technical, industry information and training. As an active member of the NWFA, MacDonald Hardwoods is pleased to pass along these useful hardwood floor maintenance tips compiled by the industry experts at the NWFA.
The NWFA has identified 10 steps you can take to maintain the beauty of your floors.
1. Avoid the use of sheet vinyl or tile floor care products on wood flooring. Some Self-polishing acrylic waxes cause wood to become slippery and dull.
2. Throw rugs in high-traffic areas help prevent grit, dirt and other debris from being tracked onto your wood floors. Use them to prevent scratching.
3. Avoid a wet-mop. Standing water can dull the finish and possibly damage the wood.
4. Wipe up spills immediately.
5. Do not over-wax a wood floor. Buff a dull floor instead.
6. Place glides under the legs of furniture. Glides will prevent scuffing and scratching.
7. Avoid walking across your wood flooring in cleats, sports shoes and high heels. This kind of impact can dent any floor surface.
8. Be careful moving heavy furniture across your wood floors. Don’t slide it – pick up the furniture completely to protect the wood flooring.
9. To protect your wood kitchen floor from moisture, place an area rug in front of the kitchen sink.
10. Use a humidifier to combat wood movement and shrinkage common in arid climates and during dry seasons.
